Rare Pair of Monumental Lake Superior Sagenite Agates — Approximately 10 Pounds Combined
A truly exceptional collector opportunity: a matched pair of large Lake Superior Sagenite Agates, weighing approximately 5 pounds each and nearly 10 pounds combined.
These remarkable specimens showcase one of nature’s most fascinating mineral growth patterns — delicate sagenitic inclusions suspended within translucent chalcedony, creating intricate needle-like formations that developed over more than a billion years within ancient volcanic rock.
Unlike common agates valued primarily for color or banding, sagenite agates are prized for their internal mineral architecture. Each specimen preserves a natural geological landscape of radiating mineral structures formed through slow mineral deposition inside ancient volcanic cavities.
Finding large, intact Lake Superior agates is already uncommon; finding large sagenitic specimens of this size and quality is a much rarer occurrence. Offered together, this pair creates a dramatic display unlike ordinary agate collections — two complementary geological sculptures formed by nature itself.
They were both collected during a rare huge storm that brought in 15 foot waves. This storm took off 3-4 feet of sand from this tiny beach revealing a large patch of stones. Only a few select specimens were actually noted worthy, but the few I found were Note Worthy!!
The beach is not eroded away with all the treasures that once were there. These are the largest known Marquette sagenite Agates that I’ve ever seen and have not found any info on anyone else find any of this size. Potentially the biggest ever found and I found two!!
These specimens would make an outstanding addition to a serious mineral collection, museum-style display, office centerpiece, or collector’s cabinet focused on exceptional examples from the Lake Superior region.
