This pendant is made from Pioneer Swirl furnace glass, a historic byproduct of early Michigan industrial smelting operations.
The swirling patterns are not decorative additions—they are the result of molten industrial glass cooling under uncontrolled conditions during early furnace processes. As the material separated and solidified, it formed layered movement patterns that are highly variable and never exactly repeatable.
Although commonly referred to as “slag glass,” this material represents a specific category of recovered industrial glasswork tied to a now-closed production era. Available material today comes entirely from historical stock and recovery, not modern production.
Each piece of usable glass is limited by fragmentation, surface degradation, and uneven structural integrity, meaning only a portion of recovered material is suitable for cutting and setting.
This pendant is set in solid sterling silver and finished to preserve the natural motion and depth of the original furnace glass without altering its internal structure.
