Rare Hematite Tube Copper Replacement Agate

Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan

An exceptionally uncommon Copper Replacement Agate containing preserved hematite tube structures and visible native copper mineralization.

The dark tube-like formations within this specimen are composed of hematite, while native copper occurs around portions of the tubes and can be observed within the agate itself, including a small but distinct area of copper banding. The combination of hematite tubes, copper replacement, and agate occurring together in a single specimen represents an unusual sequence of geological events rarely encountered in Copper Country material.

To date, only two examples of this formation type are known from the Keweenaw Peninsula, making this a significant collector specimen rather than a typical decorative agate.

The cut surfaces reveal both cross-sectional and longitudinal views of the hematite tubes, providing a unique look into the stone's internal structure. Areas of native copper and oxidation create a natural contrast against the translucent chalcedony, highlighting the complex mineral history preserved within the specimen.

This piece may not be defined by bright colors or classic fortification patterns. Its significance lies in its rarity and geological uniqueness—a specimen that records multiple mineralizing processes within a single stone.

Features:

  • Preserved hematite tube structures
  • Native copper surrounding portions of the tubes
  • Visible copper banding within the agate
  • Collected from Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula
  • One of only two known examples of this formation type

A remarkable addition for advanced agate collectors, Copper Country enthusiasts, and mineral collectors seeking material that is seldom seen and rarely offered for sale.

Some specimens are purchased for their beauty. Others are purchased because another opportunity may never come along. This is one of those stones.
